Fellows and Staff (ANN/FS)

Staff Files – Records of academic and support staff, mainly covering their appointment and contractual details, although some contain more detailed correspondence. Only a selection has been retained for the archive with an emphasis on Honorary, Emeritus and Supernumerary Fellows. More recent files are mostly held digitally.

Staff Files are only available for research after the death of the subject or when more than a hundred years have passed since their date of birth. 

Individual staff collections – some staff members donated their papers to the College. 

Individual collections include:

  • Ruth F Butler (1881-1992, Assistant to the Principal 1906-1921, Modern History Tutor 1913-1933, Vice-Principal 1919-1938, Senior Tutor and Dean of Degrees 1925-1941) – Personal papers including correspondence, her memorandum on ‘Founders” of St Anne’s’ (1965), her copy of the University Statuta presented to her in 1920 and her matriculation and degree certificates.
  • Ivy Williams (1877-1966, Jurisprudence Tutor 1920-1945) – Copy of David Copperfield presented to commemorate her being the first woman in England to be called to the Bar.
  • Annie Barnes (1903-2003, French Tutor 1947-1971) – Personal papers, including her passport, correspondence, offprints and published material.
  • Cecile Hugon (1881-1952, French Tutor 1922-1947) – Letter from A J Carlyle (1911); letter from Methuen & Co (1921); MS of her lectures; and an album of her watercolour paintings and a collection of loose sketches.
  • Margaret Hubbard (1924-2011, Classics Tutor 1957-1986) – Photos and correspondence with her partner Gwyneth Matthews.
  • Martin Speight (Tutorial Fellow in Biology 1978-2017) and Marianne Fillenz (1924-2012, Tutorial Fellow Physiology 1963-1992) – Papers and correspondence.
  • Ruth Harvey (1918-1980, German Tutor 1959-1980) – Lecture notes and papers.
  • Marjorie Reeves (1905-2003, History Tutor 1938-1974, Vice Principal 1951-1967, Honorary Fellow) – Research material both on history of SOHS and St Anne's (for publication of 1979 history booklet) and Joachim of Fiore. The College Library also holds her book collection of 231 volumes.
  • Rosemary Pountney (1937-2016, Honorary Fellow) – Work on Samuel Beckett: correspondence, working papers and scripts. She also donated a collection of books to the Library (187 volumes on Beckett annotated with notes and stage directions).
